Dr. Shirley Newton- Guest, LICSW, LCSW-C

Dr. Shirley Newton-Guest is the Clinical Director, a co-founder, and a partner of New Perspective Transcultural Therapeutic and Training Consultants, LLC. Before establishing this organization, she developed and provided leadership to private and non-profit comprehensive community-based mental health facilities in Washington, D.C. She served as a full-time professor and Departmental Chair at Coppin State University in the University of Maryland System and was a full-time professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. She is well respected in the practice and academic communities for her innovative and charismatic leadership style.

 

Dr. Newton-Guest is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Washington, D.C., and a Licensed Certified Social Worker – Clinical in the State of Maryland. She has an extensive background in programmatic oversight, program development, implementation, clinical supervision, and direct clinical practice. She has worked in the public and private sectors in mental health, maternal and child health, homelessness, and substance use disorders. She is a published author, and an accomplished presenter at the regional, national, and international levels.

 

Dr. Newton-Guest is currently serving as the Clinical Director at Bethany Christian Services, and an Ethics Tutor for the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners, the State’s Licensing Board.  She is a Commissioner for the Prince George’s County Board of Social Services. She is also an adjunct professor at Howard University School of Social Work. Dr. Newton-Guest received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Grambling State University in Grambling, LA. She earned her Master’s and Doctor of Social Work degrees from Howard University School of Social Work in Washington, D.C.

Courtney Haggins, MA, LCPC

Courtney A.G. Haggins is a co-founder and partner of New Perspective Transcultural Therapeutic and Training Consultants, LLC. Before establishing this organization, she provided therapeutic services to individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders and non-medical counseling services to children in Prince George’s County, Maryland.  She also provided clinical services on inpatient psychiatric units to multiple populations with acute psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, dissociative disorders, and substance use disorders. She has experience working with children, adolescents, and adults.

 

Courtney has the uniqueness of earning a degree in Business Administration. She has years of experience in fiscal management, marketing, and public relations. This combination of experiences has produced a highly-skilled, knowledgeable, and compassionate clinician. She is dedicated to improving the lives of the clients she serves. She consistently advocates for the reduction of stigma associated with mental illnesses and treatment. Clients and colleagues speak admirably about her patience, non-judgmental attitude, genuineness, and her engaging smile.

 

Courtney is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Maryland. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Clark Atlanta University and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University.

Sonya McMillan, MA, LCPC, LCADC

Ms. Sonya McMillan is a co-founder and partner of New Perspective Transcultural Therapeutic and Training Consultants, LLC. Sonya provided intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment to individuals with co-occurring disorders in Prince George’s County, Maryland. She provides a safe and nurturing therapeutic environment for my clients faced with the challenges of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, and substance use disorders. She also serves those who are involved with the court systems through gambling addiction, Drug Diversion, Re-Entry, and DUI.

 

Sonya has compassion and empathy for her clients, especially those dealing with trauma. She is trained in trauma-informed counseling and treatment of individual gambling use disorders. Making sure her clients feel respected and heard during treatment is a top priority.

 

Sonya is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor in the state of Maryland. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of North Carolina and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University.

Dr. Errol Sebastian Bolden is a co-founder and partner of New Perspective Transcultural Therapeutic and Training Consultants, LLC. He currently serves as the interim associate provost and associate vice president for academic affairs at Coppin State University in Baltimore Maryland. He also serves part-time as a senior lecturer at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies, and as a visiting professor at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. His research agenda focuses on community and organizational capacity building, university and community partnerships, faith-based community development, the globalization of higher education, as well as disengaged dads, and the disengaging of males in the academy.

 

Dr. Bolden serves on several local, national, and international boards and workgroups. He has lectured and/or conducted workshops throughout the United States, the Caribbean, South Korea, and various African countries. In January 2022, Dr. Bolden was appointed to serve as Coppin’s liaison to the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

 

Dr. Bolden has consulted with Fatherhood Programs in South Carolina. He has also worked with homeless and dialysis populations in Washington D.C. and Maryland. He is a certified grief recovery specialist. He is also an author of inspirational story books for children and adults, poetry books, devotional guides, as well as therapeutic coloring books and games.

 

Dr. Bolden migrated to the United States in 1984 where he earned his associate and bachelor’s degrees from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho, and a Master of Social Work degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He earned a second master’s degree in Public Health and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
